About Me
Hi! My name is Marie, and I am a Culinary Arts student at the Culinary Institute of Virginia. This is my online portfolio to document my education, experience, goals and eventual career; my "niche" in the culinary world, so to speak! Thanks for stopping by! This is a work in progress, and I will be updating it throughout my education with relevant projects and pictures. I consider myself a Jill of All Trades, as I have had many different life experiences. I am constantly learning, and am an avid reader. My primary interest in Culinary Arts is to feed my family better by utilizing methods and techniques rather than relying on recipes..
Experience
I am a former military brat, and current military spouse, and I have moved a lot. As a result, I have a pretty extensive and varied resume'. Some of my most interesting jobs have been as a DJ for my college campus Jazz station, a Freelance Reporter for a local newspaper in Washington state, and an Investigator for US Investigations Services, where I did security clearance background investigations on behalf of the US Office of Personnel Management. These jobs played to my strengths of communication, independence and attention to detail. I also got to speak to different people each day and work in a different environment daily, so my job was never boring! I hope my future career as a Chef will be the same way. I think my independence, career diversity, eclectic residences and job experiences will help me in whichever career path I decide on.
Goals/Aspirations
Upon completion of my Culinary Arts program, I would love to have mastered enough techniques and methods to be able to cook most foods, even those I may be unfamiliar with. I'd love to continue my education by completing a Baking and Pastry Program. Eventually, I may work as a Personal Chef or Caterer. I may go on to complete additional education to become an NTP (Nutritional Therapy Practitioner), as one of my passions is "food as medicine." I may become a food writer or critic. Who knows? The possibilities are endless. It seems that the longer I attend school, the longer the list of my opportunities/dream jobs becomes! I would love to eventually further my education in Europe and abroad, learning regional cuisines and dialects in the process! In the meantime, I would love the opportunity to do an Externship at Colonial Williamsburg, and be hired on afterwards as a Cook! Please join me as I make this journey!
My short term goals are to achieve perfect attendance, and graduate at the top of my class. I am excelling in the academic portion of my classes, but need to continue practicing my timing, knife cuts and practical skills. They're getting better!
